J.P. McMenamin was born in Co.Tyrone. He left school at 14, and still feels he was there too long.

The author has many found memories of his school days.

Going to school - Playtime - Going home from school and the restful three weeks he spent in a coma, as the result of an over zealous application of corporal punishment. Bring back the birch, says the author. Especially for mixed infants, who can be rebellious little rascals. Or even better, capital punishment. Every school should have a gallows in the playground. It would act as a deterrent for unruly pupils - and cut down on class size. Bring back the three R's says the author, reading, 'riting and ... rope.

This rare photograph shows the author
on his way to a fancy dress parade, dressed as Ivan the Terrible. The
authorcame second. First prize went to Jeffrey Donaldson, who came as Daniel O'Donnell. The author felt . . . terrible.
